SolidWorks Basic Tutorial || Surfaces (Sketching Part)

Blog-Icon

In this video we will show how to create the two sketch profiles displayed in a previous video named ‘SolidWorks Basic Tutorial || Surfaces’. This means starting new file and basic sketching topics are covered in this tutorial.

Note:-

The video has a little caption assistance, but I have given sufficient amount of pause over the tool and their tip, so that they can be read easily. In addition this, annotations are also applied over important places…. so please focus on them to understand what is being done and how….

..............................................................................
Transcription of Video
...............................................................................

  1. Start a new file with any part modelling template.
  2. The document units should be set to Metric.
  3. Create a sketch over Top Plane.
  4. Draw the sketch utilizing the 2D sketching tools as displayed…..
  5. Activate Circular Pattern Command.
  6. First select 'Entities to Pattern', which in our case is an 'Arc' here.
  7. Next define number instance to be patterned and hit Ok.
  8. Now we are ‘Adding Relations’ from short cut menu.
  9. So currently sketch is ‘Fully Defined’, next convert these geometry into construction and exit from the sketching mode.
  10. Create a new plane parallel to Top Plane at an offset distance of 9 mm.
  11. On this new plane, create a circle or sketch segment, by converting sketch entity, drawn in previous sketch.
  12. Close the visibility of planes and save the file.

SolidWorks Basic Tutorial || Surfaces

YouTube-Icon

This tutorial covers the basics of surface modelling concepts in ‘SolidWorks’ and provides information about additional detailed learning resources.

..............................................................................
Transcription of Video
................................................................................

This ‘SolidWorks Tutorial’ demonstrates how to utilize surface modelling capabilities of the software. Creating models will surfaces is convenient and the result of subsequent features to be created, is easy to guess.

Many a time you will find, that the same type of work can be done with the help of solid modelling tools also, but surface modelling has its own importance and benefits, particularly in case of complex shapes.

In this example two closed sketch profiles are visible, that were drawn previously on two different ‘Planes’.

Now we will see how to use ‘Lofted Surface Tool’ along with ‘Filled Surface Tool’ to create a closed surface body.

Later we will see how to join and convert the surface bodies into a solid body by using ‘Knit Surface Tool’.

So let us start the tutorial.

Note:-

The video has a little caption assistance, but I have given sufficient amount of pause over the tool and their tip, so that they can be read easily. In addition this, annotations are also applied over important places…. so please focus on them to understand what is being done and how….

  1. Switch to Surface Command Manager Tab.
  2. Next, with these two closed sketch profiles, create a surface body, using ‘Lofted Surface’ tool.
  3. Open the visibility of consumed sketch profiles, so that they can be reused.
  4. Activate ‘Filled Surface’ Tool and create two more surface bodies using these closed sketch profiles.
  5. Expand this node in the ‘FeatureManager Design Tree’, here we can see, the software indicates us, that we created three surface bodies.
  6. Activate Knit Surface tool to combine and convert these surface bodies into solid body.
  7. Now check the ‘FeatureManager Design Tree’ is indicates a solid body.
  8. Change the colour of the model as per your wish.
  9. On a solid body, we can apply solid modelling features like Fillet, Shell etc., see how…
  10. Now activate ‘Section View’ to examine the finished component.
  11. Our model is complete, see how it would look like, after applying some setting related to lightning and colours which is called rendering.

SolidWorks Weldment Tutorial || Ladder

Untitled-2

In this SolidWorks tutorial, we will learn about Weldment functionality of the software by creating a model of a Ladder.

First, a base sketch will be created which will be used as Path Segments for the frame, later a solid frame of 50x10 mm size will be used for creating the Ladder. But this type of Structural Member is not available in the Library of the software so we will manually create its profile and put it in the weldment profile folder of the software.

This assembly illustrates Top-Down Designing of parts in an assembly environment where cross part projection is utilized that consumes the External Reference utility of the software. The assembly contains three parts:
1. ebox.sldprt
2. egasket.sldprt
3. elid.sldprt
The ‘ebox’ was created first into the assembly by using ‘New Part’ feature. The ‘egasket’ and ‘elid’ both were created within the assembly by taking the references of the top face loop set from the box (and then the gasket respectively). The ‘Convert Entities’ tool was utilized to take the references.

  • The gasket is to be created in context of the current assembly and the top face of the box is selected from within the sketching environment and the entire face edges is projected into the sketch by using ‘Convert Entities’ tool.
  • The lid is being created in a similar manner and the face which is to be projected on the top face of the gasket. Once all the edges are projected another extrusion is projected using only the outside edges of Boss-Extrude1.
  • Note that the ‘ebox’ and ‘elid’ parts are created in context of assembly but over the Plane1 and Plane2 respectively. The “offset distance” of these planes have been set by an inch each to allow ease of viewing in the assembly.
  • Select Sketch1 under Boss-Extrude1 in the ebox.sldprt and change the dimension of the sketch.
  • When you RETURN from the sketch edit and the part edit back to the top level of the ebox.sldasm you will see both the gasket and lid update to reflect the change you made in the sketch of the box extrusion.
